Mythology:
The truth /story according to Hindu Mythology goes like this … A group of deeply religious pilgrims visit Sage Narada, a saint , to confess their sins. Narada threw his 'valkalam' (cloth made out of the bark of a tree used by the saints) and it landed at a place near the seashore, where he instructed his devotees to consecrate a temple and offer prayers and perform penance for release from their sins. The place then came to be known as 'Papanasam' meaning ‘redemption from sins’. And over the years, became ‘Varkala’ (perhaps from the word ‘Valkalam’).
